eeditThe first character in the ceety's name (宁 or 寧) means "serene", while its seicont character (波) translates tae "waves". Thegither, the name literally means "Serene Waves". The ceety is abbreviatit Yǒng (甬), efter the Yong Hill (甬山), a prominent coastal hill near the ceety, juist lik the Yong River (甬江) that flows throu Ningbo. The abbreviation Ning is uised mair commonly for Nanjing.
