The wird “Bergisch” in the name does no oreeginate frae its location in the earldom o Berg an wis no addit tae distinguish it frae Mönchengladbach as believit bi mony fowk, but frae the earls who gave their name tae the region. At the stairt o the 12t century the earls o "Berg" settled in the aurie an it became the grand duchy o "Berg". This is whaur the first pairt o the name (Bergisch) comes frae.

The seicont pairt o the name is a lot haurder tae splain in Inglis, as it oreeginates frae Law German (Bergisches Platt). "Gladbach" evolvit frae the stream "Strunde", which receivit an airtificial river bed in early medieval times. Basically the river wis "laid" which means "gelaat" in "Bergisch Platt", the slang/dialect o the region. Durin the centuries the wird "gelaat" evolvit an wis roondit bi the fowk tae "glad".
