Problems with protected templates
eeditPlease see Template talk:Babel and Template talk:Uiser sco-0. Also, you might want to create a Template:Editprotected (or redirect it to a similar template in Scots), like they have on the English Wikipedia, so admins can be notified of requests like this. - dcljr 08:15, 8 Julie 2011 (UTC)
- Gotcha. I'll take a look at them and try to clean them up - will look into the template later, as well. Thanks for the heads up! Avicennasis 17:39, 9 Julie 2011 (UTC)
Hi! Is not it time and close this request? Érico msg 04:18, 24 Juin 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed - as we have almost no active users, I had forgotten that was still open - I will be closing it. Thanks for the heads up! Avicennasis (talk) 04:49, 24 Juin 2012 (UTC)
Some low-level problems in scowiki
eedit... that I have noticed.
- Templates have no default colours.
- Enwiki has gone to the hlist system for templates, so if users are going to clone from there ...
- There is no working portal.
- The Commons template does not allow text to pass by on the left.
- The contributions page buttons return data from enwiki, not scowiki:
<User>: Subpages · User rights · Edit count, etc. - The word "Wikipedia" is spelled at least 3 different ways in official places.
- The word "use" tends to be "uise" everywhere except for User:Avicennasis.
Romanian WP uses a banner to direct editors to focus on 3 or 4 articles at a time, and that appears to get results. I would put Highland Games -- Hieland gemmes -- in such a banner.
In Toronto, Varlaam (talk) 14:27, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- Also, I forgot, we have a "uiser" who needs to be shut down. 100% of edits are vandalism. He has targeted my home page too, which is an honour for me. Varlaam (talk)
- Already blocked. Avicennasis (talk) 15:27, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
- It's a real shame when someone has that much energy and just pisses it away.
- I hope you will become a regular visitor again.
- Thanks, man. Varlaam (talk) 15:42, 25 September 2012 (UTC)
Move request
eeditCould you rename File:Robert burns.jpg to File:Robert burns statue.jpg?
The enwiki/commons image of that name is better and is being blocked.
Also, templates like Requested move are absent, are they?
Thanks, Varlaam (talk) 17:38, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
- Moved. And no, there's no template - and no need for one. I'm the only active admin here, it seems, so it's probably easiest to just leave me a note. :-) Avicennasis (talk) 05:10, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
- But I don't want you to feel that sort of pressure. You are not being compensated for your vigilance, as you guys deserve to be, to my mind, and it is not your fault that you are the active one.
- I personally would prefer to put my request in an undirected queue, and if you then choose to act on that, then more power to you.
- Have you alerted your co-admins that this project appears to be alive again? I am Walcoming new users again, hoping that they will become regulars.
- Varlaam (talk) 02:01, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
Thanks very much
eedit For the privileges. I had thought you had enabled those system-wide, and not for me specifically.
Thanks again, Varlaam (talk) 19:08, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
(Some fowk dinna like the haggis, so it's a thristle.)
Block
eeditHi. User:Aweescotsman came back with a sock-puppet User:Aweescotsman2 that I blocked. Feel free to change the block if necessary. -- Tegel (talk) 13:23, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks, I appreciate the help. :-) Avicennasis (talk) 05:05, 29 September 2012 (UTC)
A wee scots nuisance
eeditHe is now called Special:Contributions/50.48.70.34. Varlaam (talk) 02:02, 30 September 2012 (UTC)
He may be reforming. He made a couple of constructive edits. Varlaam (talk) 14:21, 1 October 2012 (UTC)
- Ah, I see you have acted already.
- We have exactly 2 content-creating users, Fixer88 under his bewildering array of identities, and me.
- The last time a user, other than we two, created an article was when? I have no tools to tell me that.
- It's your call, but as for Zebra, I would let it stand.
- Earlier we had an environment without discipline where a young lad ran amok.
- That is no longer the case.
- Varlaam (talk) 14:34, 1 October 2012 (UTC) (age 51)
- The importance of redemption is a theme in Dostoevsky's novels. Varlaam (talk)
- Feel free to create the Zebra article again, if you wish. Besides those you mention, the IPs 98.255.192.118 and 66.60.156.2 create some articles. There are scatters from others, as well. Avicennasis (talk) 13:14, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- The importance of redemption is a theme in Dostoevsky's novels. Varlaam (talk)
- I am 99.9% certain that 98 (in Sacramento) and 66 (at the Sacramento Library) are both Fixer88 who has 2 other named accounts. I have also seen at least one 2010-era IP user who has his style and interests.
- As far as I can see, he, collectively, has written 95% of this project's content. And why he uses multiple identities ... folly of youth?
- I don't wish to use the "s" word since I have never seen him using this for evil.
- When I was a biggish wheel at the IMDb in the 1990s, and I invented some of their conventions, I used multiple pseudonyms too. But that was to classify and subdivide films I was working on. And my IDs were only display names; the credits all tallied at my account, also called Varlaam.
- I have no special interest in zebras. I just see a teenage boy doing what some of our friends, if not we ourselves necessarily, might have done at that age.
- He tried to make amends. If I were playing devil's advocate, I would say that he never received the escalating series of warnings. I have seen at least one case at enwiki where the goof received a dozen "final" warnings. Our Dennis the Menace received zero (I did not provide any).
- I'd put the kid on a short leash and tell him so, unequivocally.
- Varlaam (talk) 14:21, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- Fixer88
- For example, the article on Chairman Mao was created by him under an IP, then modified by him as Fixer.
- The only other mod comes from you. Avicbot believes Chairman Mao still to be alive!
- There appear to be quite a few articles about dead people assigned to Category:Living people, which should be Category:Livin fowk.
- Varlaam (talk) 16:09, 3 October 2012 (UTC)
- Category should be fixed. Avicennasis (talk) 16:52, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Edit count
eeditIt is still asking for enwiki:
http://toolserver.org/~tparis/pcount/index.php?name=Varlaam&lang=en&wiki=wikipedia
Varlaam (talk) 20:16, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
- Should be fixed, now. Avicennasis (talk) 16:26, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks. It is working for me.
- It is my hope that with a cool graphical tool certain IP users will be more likely to use their named accounts.
- Varlaam (talk) 17:16, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
Livin fowk
eeditMy choice of words may have been unclear. What I was trying to indicate was that President Diem of South Vietnam was assassinated when I was a kid -- around the same time that I attended a Bobby Kennedy rally -- and is neither Living people, nor Livin fowk. Many or most of the fowk on that AvicBot hitlist are dead, dead, daid.
More alive than dead, touch wood, Varlaam (talk) 17:08, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- Feel free to comb through the category and straighten that out - I made a few edits to that end. Avicennasis (talk) 23:22, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Things not working
eeditNavigational templates. Hlist is not supported and there are no colours, so every template looks less than its best.
Now, my degree is in electrical engineering, and I have been a software designer and programmer. I appeared on the Discovery Channel in the States in the 1980s demonstrating one of my programs. Are you technical?
Link GA and Link FA don't work. On their own, that's rather trivial, but, thinking as an engineer, I could speculate that that may be symptomatic of a more consequential underlying problem.
Varlaam (talk) 20:39, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm 'technical', at least I sure hope so. :-) A lot of this has to do with CSS not being updated, as well as underlying outdated javascript. Some of the templates could probably use an import from EnWp. Avicennasis (talk) 23:20, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Broadcast message?
eeditDoes enwiki have the ability to send a message to all its Scots users only? Suggesting that they should consider coming 'ha(i)me' to scowiki since it has changed since they last looked at it?
Varlaam (talk) 13:56, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- Not really. There are options, but none that would really be permissible there, in my opinion. Avicennasis (talk) 23:18, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Apparent all-vandalism user
eeditI get released on parole in 3 weeks
eeditOver at enwiki. I still think a 3-month suspension for getting cranky at POV pushers is excessive. 3 days would have been reasonable.
The whole time I've been blocked at enwiki I have still been working on that project; my detailed to-do list for enwiki runs to 100s of items.
But I like scowiki. It's very nuts 'n' bolts. It's still going through its birth pangs. I was a C programmer in the 1980s, and that was also fairly low level.
It's fun here, so I intend to hang around.
Are there other rights and whatnot I should be requesting from you? Should I be a File Mover for example? There was that .jpg.
I used to have a job nicknamed the Main Line of Defence (so named by a co-worker who'd been in the Israeli Air Force). Everybody's work had to be approved by me. It was a real bottleneck.
I see a lone admin as being like the Main Line of Defence, and it's not an enviable position to be in. I needed to work on my own client, but I had these oppressive 'MLD' duties too.
I can't be an admin myself; I have a short temper.
So if you can't rally your peers, and you want to offload some minor functions, I suspect that would be ok with me.
Cheers, Varlaam (talk) 17:08, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm kind of used to being the only admin around here, so it's no bother. Also, we don't have all the same rights that EnWp has - for example, there is no File Mover here. Thank you for the offer, though. Avicennasis (talk) 23:07, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Problem user
eeditSpecial:Contributions/190.162.111.147 is deleting perfectly good Scots text from articles on Chile without justification, and dumbing down the links.
I spoke to him nicely in Spanish, and he is still doing it.
Varlaam (talk) 05:12, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
- Hello. Add only information relevant to the articles in question, plus add references in Spanish and English, also realize some cosmetic changes to enhance the visuals.--190.162.111.147 05:17, 6 October 2012 (UTC)
Resolved. We are back on track and creating useful articles about Chile.
Varlaam (talk) 14:37, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
"Ye hae a new message (last change)."
eeditThat's the new message text.
But "change" in WP otherwise is always "chynge", e.g. over on the left and down at the bottom.
And "last" often seems to be "laist".
No urgency. I am just noting it while I am aware of it. Varlaam (talk) 03:23, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
- I'm trying to track this one down. It's related to MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessages, though I'm not sure where to make the change at. Avicennasis (talk) 23:17, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Search box is buggered
eeditIt now displays "containing" which fails. It takes you directly to any like-named article without displaying the list of matches.
This change occurred today? yesterday?
Varlaam (talk) 15:10, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
- I wrote a further comment here, an example, but it was wiped out within seconds with a "Webpage has expired".
- That nonsense just started today.
- That's the second time in an hour that "Webpage has expired" has deleted something I had already written.
- Varlaam (talk) 15:16, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
SUL status check
eeditThat check now provokes a security warning.
Since yesterday.
This would presumably be another side effect of the O/S change that produced the issues above.
Varlaam (talk) 15:42, 11 October 2012 (UTC)
Webpage expired
eeditThere appears to have been some progress made on rectifying the O/S issues. Varlaam (talk) 21:48, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Special:RecentChanges borked
eeditNot sure what is wrong with it, however, I have raised bugzilla:41187 to see if we can get soemone to fix it. Billinghurst (talk) 15:31, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- I have been told that there is a problem with one of the revisions, so when a shorter number to display in the RC is chosen, then it is okay, and that is correct. Billinghurst (talk) 15:43, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Are you referring to the Fatal exceptions of the past day or two?
- I am still getting them when I ask for the previous 500.
- Varlaam (talk) 15:57, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, shorten your RecentChanges so that it is shorter than 480, we have bumped it that far. To note that they have split the bugzilla back out and it is now at Bugzilla:41258. It seems somehow related to the template IPAc-pl which deleted successfully, however, the problem surrounding it still exists. We will watch and learn. Billinghurst (talk) 16:06, 21 October 2012 (UTC)
- It looks partly due to the edit summary being blank and getting garbage code from the boduy in the edit summary, see Bugzilla:38566 Billinghurst (talk) 16:40, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

"Editors are invited to contribute content at the Scots Wiktionary at the Wikimedia Incubator."
eeditThat's not in Scots, eh?
I think at this point I do automatic "code-switching" between the two languages so I never even noticed it was wrong.
Officially, it's Wiktionar in Scots, fer exemplar.

Protected pages and templates
eeditI would like to have access to everything. Many of our pages are antiques. Varlaam (talk) 15:35, 3 November 2012 (UTC)
- We don't have any sudo-users here, just admins, and I can't make you an admin as I'm not a 'crat. (And our only 'crat has been MIA for years.) If you ask, though, I can unprotect pages for you. Avicennasis (talk) 10:56, 20 November 2012 (UTC)
An achievement for Fixer
eeditThe main main page http://www.wikipedia.org/ is still listing Scots under 1000+.
Thanks primarily to Fixer, Scots should be moved to the 10 000+ section where the big boys hang out.
Varlaam (talk) 19:34, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
