Ghasm
Ghasm (Arabic: غصم, spelt Ghasam) is a veelage in southern Sirie, admeenistratively pairt o the Daraa Governorate, locatit northeast o Daraa an wast o Bosra. Other nearby localities include Maarbah tae the east, al-Sahwah tae the north, al-Jiza tae wast an al-Mataaiya tae the sooth. Accordin tae the Sirie Central Bureau o Statistics (CBS), Ghasm haed a population of 3,666 in the 2004 census.[1]

History

The veelage contains a ruined Byzantine-era kirk. It wis dedicatit tae the honor o Saunts Sergius an Bacchus in 593 CE.[3] The Sunni Muslim al-Miqdad clan haes been the predominant faimily in Ghasm an a nummer o nearbi touns syne the Ottoman Empire era.[4]
In 1596 Ghasm appeared in the Ottoman tax registers as Gasim an wis pairt o the nahiya o Butayna in the Qada o Hauran. It hade an entirely Muslim population consistin o 25 hoosehaulds an 12 bachelors. Taxes wur paid on wheat, baurley, simmer crops, goats an/or beehives, an a watter-mill.[5]
In 1895 travellers passin through the veelage were tauld o hou the Druze haed raidit the veelage in 1893. The veelagers haed tae rely on the Druze for the watter-course tae be led bi the veelage, an in 1894 they haed paid the Druze 200 mejidiehs.[2]
