Daraa (Arabic: درعا‎), an aw Darʿā, Dara’a, Deraa, Dera, an Derʿā ("fortress", compare Dura-Europos), is a ceety in soothwastren Sirie, near the border wi Jordan, wi a population o approximately 77,203.[3] It is the caipital o Daraa Govrenorate, historically pairt o the auncient Hauran region. Daraa is an auncient ceety datin back tae the Canaanites. It wis mentioned in Egyptian hieroglyphic tablets at the time o the Pharaoh Thutmose III atween 1490 an 1436 BC. It wis kent in those days as the ceety o Atharaa, an wis later mentioned in the Auld Testament as Edrei in the Kinrick o Baushan. Locatit in the ceety itsel are a few ruins includin caves an auncient dwellins, a Roman amphitheater, an the auld Oumari Mosque which is o some airchitectural significance, datin back tae the Umayyad an Ayyubid eras.
