2013 Warld Snooker Championship

The 2013 Warld Snooker Championship (an aw referred tae as the 2013 Betfair Warld Snooker Championship for the purposes of sponsorship) wis a professional snooker toornament that teuk place frae 20 Apryle tae 6 May 2013 at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, England. It wis the 37th consecutive year that the Warld Snooker Championship haed been held at the Crucible and wis the last rankin event o the 2012/2013 saison.[1] The event wis sponsored bi Betfair for the first time.[2]

Despite haein played anly ane competitive match aw saison, defendin champion Ronnie O'Sullivan did nae lose a session in the toornament.[3] He defeatit Barry Hawkins 18–12 in the final tae acome a five-time Warld Champion, joining Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry as the anly players ever tae defend thair titles successfully at the Crucible. He broke Hendry's record of 127 career Crucible centuries, finishing the toornament wi 131. He an aw became the first player tae mak sax century braks in a Warld Championship final.[4] The toornament wis sponsored bi online betting exchange Betfair.

On 26 Apryle 2013, th first Ladies' Day wis held at the Crucible, wi events designed tae promote the sport tae girls and weemen.[5]

  • Efter a record fower Cheenese players reached the Crucible in 2012, Ding Junhui wis his naition's anly representative in 2013.[10] Poomjaeng became anly the third Thai player, efter James Wattana and Tai Pichit, tae reach the Crucible.[11]
  • Bi qualifying for the event, Peter Ebdon played in his 22nt consecutive Warld Championship, equalling the nummer of consecutive appearances made bi Steve Davis. Thay are jynt third behind the record of 27 set bi Stephen Hendry[12] an the ongoing run of 26 bi Ronnie O'Sullivan.
  • Warld Snooker lodged a formal complaint wi the BBC efter it ended live coverage during the final stages o the Ronnie O'SullivanMarcus Campbell tie tae air a repeat episode o the 1970s sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em. Wi the match an aw unavailable on the BBC Reid Button service, viewers expressed thair anger on social networks. The CEO of Warld Snooker, Barry Hearn, apologised tae fans on Twitter.
  • The seicont session o the first roond match atween Ebdon and Graeme Dott haed tae be pulled off, wi Dott leadin 8–6.[13] Follaein Dott's 10–6 veectory, he criticised Ebdon for his perceived slow play and cried for a rule tae leemit the amount of time a player coud spend ower a shot. The match atween Poomjaeng and Maguire an aw haed tae be finished off in a third session, wi Poomjaeng leadin 9–8 when the end wis postponed.[14]

  • White reached his first rankin event quarter-final bi defeatin Poomjaeng 13–3 wi a session to spare.[16] Poomjaeng lost the fowert frame o the match efter three failed attempts tae hit visible reid balls whilst uisin the spider tae brig ower the blue.[17]
  • O'Sullivan became the first defendin champion syne Murphy in 2006 tae reach the quarter-finals when he defeatit Ali Carter, his opponent in the 2008 and 2012 Warld Championship finals, bi 13 frames tae 8.[18]
  • Ricky Walden reached his first Crucible quarter-final bi defeatin Robert Milkins 13–11.[19] Milkins trailed 3–9, but focht back tae 10–11 and 11–12, afore Walden won the frame he needed for veectory.[20]
  • Barry Hawkins an aw reached his first Crucible quarter-final efter defeatin Warld nummer ane Mark Selby 13–10.[21]

Quarter-finals eedit

  • In the quarter-finals, O'Sullivan teuk 12 o the first 13 frames against Stuart Bingham and won the match 13–4.[22]
  • Judd Trump battled back frae 3–8 behind against Murphy tae win 13–12 efter a dramatic 53-minute deciding frame.[23][24]
  • Walden beat Welsh player White 13–6 and Hawkins defeatit Cheenae's Ding Junhui 13–7 tae put the twa remainin non-English competitors oot o the toornament.[25]
  • Walden reached the semi finals o the Warld Championship on his third attempt, despite never haein previously won a match in his anly ither twa appearances at The Crucible in 2009 and 2011.

Semi-finals eedit

  • This wis anly the third time in the modren history of snooker that aw fower Warld Championship semi-finalists war English. The ither twa times war when Joe Johnson played Neal Foulds and Jimmy White played Steve Davis in 1987 and when Steve James played White and John Parrott played Davis in 1991.[26]
  • In the 23rd frame of his semi-final against Trump, O'Sullivan received a reprimand frae referee Michaela Tabb for allegedly makin an obscene gesture wi his cue. A Warld Snooker spokesman later stated that eyewitnesses haed an aw observed O'Sullivan makin an inappropriate gesture, awtho it wis nae captured on camera.[27]
  • O'Sullivan defeatit Trump 17–11,[25] and became the first defendin champion tae reach the final syne Ken Doherty in 1998.[28]
  • Hawkins focht back frae 8–12 behind against Walden tae win 17–14.[29]

  • O'Sullivan led the final 5–3 efter the first session. Awtho Hawkins drew level at 7–7 in the seicont session, O'Sullivan won the last three frames o the day tae tak a 10–7 overnight lead.[30]
  • O'Sullivan's brak of 103 in the 15t frame wis his 128th century brak at the Crucible Theatre, braking Stephen Hendry's record of 127 Crucible centuries.[31] During the final he extendit the record tae 131 century braks.[32]
  • O'Sullivan led 15–10 efter the third session,[33] and went on tae win the final 18–12 tae tak his fift Warld title.[4] He became the first defendin champion tae retain his title syne Hendry in 1996,[34] an the first player tae score sax century braks in a Warld Championship final.[4]
  • The final haed a tot of aicht century braks, which equalled the record set in the 2002 final atween Hendry and Ebdon.[35]
  • At the age of 37, O'Sullivan became the auldest Warld Snooker Champion syne 45-year-auld Ray Reardon in 1978.[36]
