Need some advice eedit

Moved from Uiser collogue:MJLMJLTauk 18:29, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's been many weeks since I was indeffed from enwiki, and the time during then has allowed my mental health to recover enough to allow me to edit Wikimedia sites, especially Wikidata. Also, despite my efforts to focus on my real-life due to being told to, being an unemployed person on a gap year between high school and college and therefore with only limited real-life commitments means I have little real-life to focus on, especially due to the coronavirus lockdowns (Queens is the epicenter of the pandemic). So I was wondering, is it possible for me to get out of SO if I'm able to find a mentor to help me out? I'm planning to submit one last unblock request to UTRS, so I wanted to tell you in advance.

BTW April Fools (though my help request is not a joke) and good luck with your adminship on scowiki! I'm posting here because TPA is disabled back on enwiki. I'm not watching this page so if you wanna reply ping me. Miraclepine (tauk) 15:40, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Miraclepine: The short answer is, no. Don't do that. UTRS appeal at this stage is a mega-bad idea, and getting a mentor is no shortcut for that. Try to find ways to be constructive. As someone who struggles with mental health issues as well, Wikipedia is not always the greatest use of my time. It's very stressful, and it can compound a negative mental state into a worse one depending on the circumstances.
I believe we discussed you contributing to another Wikimedia project, so how has that been going? –MJLTauk 15:51, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's been going very well doing a lot of constructive stuff on Wikidata. I've had some significant experience with mix'n'match, made several Wikidata entries for people who died of COVID-19, I'm merging entries that share Wikitree IDs and Peerage IDs, and I'm currently adding as much Adelsvapen IDs to Wikidata as possible. From the looks of it, I seem to have recovered enough, and I've finished working on the UTRS appeal. Wanna look at it? Doesn't have any private info but has some neat unblock conditions like an interaction ban (with a one-off exemption) and partial block (given the block reason was related to one namespace). Miraclepine (tauk) 16:01, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: Hm, let's take a look at it. –MJLTauk 17:09, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'll post it later. I'm gonna be busy for a while. But I'll have it by 4PM. Miraclepine (tauk) 17:12, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: Sounds good! :) –MJLTauk 17:14, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

It's 4pm, and I should have it soon. But I'm a little worried. Should I post the whole UTRS request here or should I summarize it before submitting it to UTRS. I feel doing the latter is a courtesy because enwiki admins are the only users who can view UTRS requests besides the submitters. Miraclepine (tauk) 20:00, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Miraclepine: Um, idk a summary is fine if you want. You can also send it via WP:Discord if you want. Up to you. –MJLTauk 20:03, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've sent it to email thru your Wikidata account since I just put it back and one of the unblock conditions involves the email. The reason I wanna come back to Wikipedia is to create Wikipedia articles and because my block was related only to the Wikipedia namespace and is more suited for a partial block. Miraclepine (tauk) 20:14, 1 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
If any more issues needs to be addressed before I submit the request to UTRS, let me know. Miraclepine (tauk) 03:00, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

I sent you the request so tell me, is it ready to submit to UTRS now and if not, what should I change there? BTW I wanted to do this weeks earlier but you weren't very active. Miraclepine (tauk) 17:41, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Miraclepine: Oh sorry, I typed out a response but forgot to click send. After reading that email, I would advise against appealing at this time. From my point of view, it is still unlikely you would get anywhere with that kind of request. You failed to mention the primary reason you were blocked (which was being disruptive in admin-y fields).
I remember talking to a user on WP:Discord at the time about your situation, and they said something that I will repeat to you now: if you had stuck with just doing great work with DYK, then you probably would never have been blocked.
Requesting a partial block or mentorship doesn't really make up for your own acknowledgement that you did some pretty... pretty disruptive things when you stepped into the administration-side of Wikipedia. Therefore, your request should only focus on what you have learned, how you have grown, and what you plan on doing with this self-realization.
Ask yourself, are you still the same Miraclepine you were when you got blocked? If not, why? What's changed inside you? Then, explain in your request how you have changed personally (rather than just the circumstances of your situation). That'd be my advice for appealing. Regards, –MJLTauk 18:01, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've taken a careful look at your response for several minutes, and it is now clear that it will take some time for me to answer all those questions and address all these issues. That said, everything should all be sorted out in a week or two.
Also I would like to have the entire discussion moved to my scowiki talk page because it's very possible it will take up a large amount of this page. Miraclepine (tauk) 18:27, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
Done. Please ping me to ensure I see a reply, :) –MJLTauk 18:30, 2 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: I'm back, and now I'll answer that question you asked me here. No, I am no longer the same Miraclepine I was when I was blocked. My mental health has recovered enough for me to edit the English Wikipedia, as shown by my prolific editing at Wikidata and Commons. I am now more focused on Wikipedia's commitment to expanding easy access to knowledge, and I now understand that Wikipedia is built on cooperating with other people, and that failing to do so may result in losing my ability to contribute. I am now more careful and self-aware of my own consequences, and that the price I pay for my misbehavior may cause a systemic bias in Wikipedia's content. Finally, I understand that I do not know if I am a net positive to the English Wikipedia even if I believe I am. If I integrate all this into the request, can it be submitted?
Also you told me that I didn't mention the primary reason I was blocked (being disruptive in admin-y fields). I mentioned in the request that it was "primarily related to the Wikipedia namespace". The block reason was "WP:CIR: repeatedly warned to stop creating work on admin boards about things that they don’t know about, but refusal to listen".
In response to BHG asking me to expand what sources I use, if I'm unblocked I might consider getting access to the Wikipedia Library. Miraclepine (tauk) 23:42, 4 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: I would like to hear a response from you on my answer to your question, so I've given you a second ping. Unfortunately, I might be a little late at finalizing the unblock request since I'm focusing a lot of time on Wikidata. I'll send you the email with my unblock request this month (I can no longer guarantee one week or two due to the previous sentence) to see if anything needs fixing, until then I'm gonna be on Wikidata if you need me. Miraclepine (tauk) 18:02, 7 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
My bad. I'll review this now. –MJLTauk 01:39, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Thank you. I'll accept any apology you make for being a little late. Miraclepine (tauk) 01:42, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so like if I'm an enwiki admin; the first thing I want to know is whether or not you are going to repeat the disruption that got you blocked. I'm not sure you quite get what to say to alleviate that concern.
Now, I'm going to ask you a single question, and bear in mind the answer to this question pretty much will determine whether you'll likely be unblocked or not. Was the blocking administrator wrong to block you originally? –MJLTauk 02:00, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: At first I thought I was mad about having an indefinite sitewide block, but as time went on, I came to realize that they did the right thing, that my behavior at the time was getting out of hand, and that I have ultimately paid the price for my overconfidence. Enough time has passed to show that I have recovered enough to be able to contribute to Wikipedia, especially with my contributions to Wikidata. That is why I want to prove that I am in a sufficient condition to return to enwiki. Remember, the admin said on my talk page, "[a]ny appeal would have to convince people that all the drama would stop," and since I've recovered long enough, I would like to be offered an opportunity to show that I can help in Wikipedia's mission: to expand access to knowledge. Indeed, I'm hoping I can find a mentor to help me recover. Miraclepine (tauk) 02:11, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
Okay, mention that. Good work  MJLTauk 02:46, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Very nice. I'll format that to the unblock request. That said, it's getting late so time go get some sleep. BTW always make sure the template exists by pressing "show preview". Miraclepine (tauk) 02:48, 8 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: I've sent you the unblock request draft, this time thru your scowiki email. i even put the block reason in quotes in verbatim. If anything needs fixing please ping me. Miraclepine (tauk) 01:05, 11 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'll be taking a look at it tomorrow. Thank you! :) –MJLTauk 01:06, 12 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Very nice! Till then, I'll be at Wikidata if you need me. And please, reset the indents of this discussion (that is, the indents of the next post here should be reset to zero.)   Miraclepine (tauk) 01:09, 12 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

@MJL: 24 hours have passed since then. Is the unblock request adequate enough to be sent to UTRS? Also, I was gonna wait for you to reply, but I guess I really do it faster. Miraclepine (tauk) 00:13, 13 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply

@MJL: Another ping to remind you. Miraclepine (tauk) 11:29, 14 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: Should I mention in the unblock request that you're helping me write said unblock request? Miraclepine (tauk) 20:23, 15 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Miraclepine: Sorry for the delay. Real life got in the way, and Wikipedia is obviously not going to be as much of a priority when things hit the fan for me.
I'm looking at your email now, and I have to blunt with you. It kind of reeks of this condensation which you should really try to unravel. Remove phrases like "look it up" and "the topics I see fit" then replace them with more.. humbled phrasing. Also, cut the second-to-last paragraph. Yours was a case of several high-profile incidents that led to a lot of wasted time, so giving that much attention to that specific aspect of your Wikipedia story is just unhelpful.
As to whether you should mention me, well... it's not like any of this is confidential. If you decide to mention me (and for the love of gosh please don't say something incredulous when mentioning me or put words in my mouth.. that's happened enough for me already), then link to this conversation if possible. It's only fair for the unblocking admins to see I have had reservations about this request.
Also, don't mention real life. Plenty of us have had problems in real life, so you are just going to get eye-rolls by mentioning it. This pandemic eventually will end; I don't see why you need to include that paragraph. –MJLTauk 18:55, 18 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: I've just been told not to spill drama over to Wikidata (it was just one incident, but still), so I wonder if it is really a good idea to use this page to discuss my unblock request? The only reason I was here was because TPA is disabled at enwiki. Luckily it's been quiet here between us two, but still.
I just edit-conflicted with you, so the response to your comments will be delayed. Miraclepine (tauk) 18:57, 18 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: As for the changes, I've removed both the second-to-last paragraph and the "COVID-19 = no real-life to focus on" part which already has the "look it up" phrase, and I changed the words "the topics I see fit" to "Japan (including anime), foreign politicians, etc.". Don't know where to put the "MJL helped me with the unblock request" part though. Miraclepine (tauk) 19:11, 18 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
You should probably just listen to Tony. Honestly, we need to cease further correspondence on this project because, as I just have realized, it is a violation of our tauk page guidelines here as well (which requires all conversations in talkspace strictly relate to the encyclopaedia). I'm going to have to trout myself for that and allowing this to proceed as far as it did. Oh well, lessons learned. I'm going to add that page to our list of behaviour guidelines to prevent this mistake in the future. –MJLTauk 19:18, 18 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
@MJL: With that, It's clear-cut we are done here. Miraclepine (tauk) 19:36, 18 Apryle 2020 (UTC)Reply
