Do me a favour?

eedit

I have written a number of very short articles which require a proper Scotsing.
Could you have a look?
In Canada, Varlaam (talk) 17:42, 23 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

All of mine appear here: Category:Pages that wis written by a body that's mither tongue isna Scots.
Warld War II, for example.

Warld Weir

eedit

That spelling is used on 21 pages.
Warld War is on 436 pages.
One thing I have learned from this project is there is nae staundard spellin in Scots.
Renaming the page is easy; but is it necessary?
Varlaam (talk) 00:07, 24 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

And don't forget to sign a Collogue page with 4 tildes.
Did you add that page to your watchleet? Varlaam (talk)

If ye think it isnae necessary then Ah see nae problem wi it.

Jamiemaloneyscoreg (talk)

I think this is ultimately an unresolvable issue, and it's akin to splitting hairs.
We want the readership to increase, and that means more content, not perfect spelling.
The Scots wiktionary is an active project too; perhaps this matter of variant spellings can be thrashed out there. I gather that one's precise home in Scotland determines one's pronunciation and therefore one's phonetic spelling, since no authority has as yet formalized Scots.
It is conceivable that if we do a decent job here, then we are creating a de facto Scots standard.
That is largely how standard Italian came about. Dante wrote a book. Everyone read it and followed his lead.
We could be a community of Dantes here. We meaning more you than me.

I've been reverting all of his edits. It is conventional to say you have done that on his Talk page as evidence that an admin will later use to shut the guy down.
You might consider noting your reversion that way too.

Glesga

eedit

Hey Séamus, I found your page. I am thrice your age!
You are political; that is cool. But on the subject of regional independence, my country has Quebec and Alberta, so I believe in accomodating regions rather than having them secede.
I enjoyed Cornwall with a girlfriend a couple of years ago. 1990, to be precise.
Spain is also a very nice place; I have been there three times. Last time I did the Running of the Bulls.
Now you are back at school?
School outranks everything else. Otherwise, since you speak Scots like a Glasweg, I would much appreciate it if you could polish my one and two sentence stub articles on important (from a Canadian perspective) Scottish topics.
But only if you are not busy with school. That is an important matter at your age.
Still with many of my original teeth, Varlaam (talk) 23:11, 26 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Awesome. I trust you since I know that you are working in good faith. We need more fowk like you.
Therefore, you can take charge of an article, by deleting the fixscots (or noscots) tag.
It's like giving it you Papal imprimatur.
You could probably have a standard message line when you do this:

Scots is now up to standard
Scots leid is nou up tae staundart

... (your words please, not mine) then use that each time, and we will then recognize that you have signed off on it.

I myself have been busy reclassifying the 1000 stubs into useable categories.

I am also going to make one of my poorly written 2-sentence stubs for the Tintin book set in Scotland.

Thanks, mate. Nice one, eh (Canadian leid). Varlaam (talk) 16:29, 14 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pacehoose

eedit

We have to resist the temptation to invent things outright.
Is that a genuine usage?
Surely your public library there has materials on names for the various neighbourhoods in the city. Is that reasonable?
Do friends and neighbours have grandparents who recall the old way of saying things?
However, officially speaking, Wikipedia has strong rules disallowing hearsay evidence. Officially Wikipedia likes reputable sources.
So, if someone's grandfather says, 'In my day we called it Pacehoose', you can't quote him in Wikipedia. That's hearsay. You need to find a published source that confirms someone's memory of the past.

We are trying to move this project in the direction of greater reliability, and that means that 'facts' are provable and verifiable.
Cheers, Varlaam (talk) 20:49, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ah wis meanin tae undae that efter haein a wee read oan th' oreegins o th' name but Ah loast track o time, sae sairy aboot that.Jamiemaloneyscoreg (talk)

Not a problem.
The articles in English on the neighbourhoods seem to provide a Scots name with a citation.
So we probably have a reliable source right there.

I think the Online Scots Dictionary is pretty good. Do you have an opinion of it? Varlaam (talk) 02:23, 24 November 2012 (UTC)Reply
