Twynham, Dumfries an Gallowa

Twynham (English Twynholm /ˈtwaɪnəm/ 'TWINE-um') is a veelage in the historic coonty o Kirkcoubrieshire[1] in Dumfries an Gallowa,[2] Scotland. It is locatit 2.25 mile nor'nor'wast o Kirkcoubrie and 4.5 mile east o Gatehoose o Fleet on the A75 road.[3]

The etymology o the name isna certaint. It micht be fae the Common Breetonic twyn (a baunk or hillock) an the Auld English hame meanin hame, or be fae the Scots an mean "atween the river baunks".[4]

History

The veelage wis foondit in the 16t century whan twa mills wis set up on the burn that passes throu the veelage centre. In the 18t century, the first schuil wis built in the veelage, wi th nouadays primary schuil built in 1911.[2] Twynham wis a pairish fae medieval times until 1975, includin the neebourin pairish o Kirkchrist fae 1654.[5]

The're a variety o leetit biggins in the auries includin the ruins o the 16t centurey Cumstoun Castle,[6] an the pairish kirk.[7] The kirk wis biggit in 1818 and wis sortit and the ruif replace't in 1941. In 1963, a kirk airchle wis addit.[2]
