Enso wis developin intae an influential toun, but the Soviet Union's hostilities against Finland led tae its occupation in 1940. In 1941, Enso wis returned tae Finland, but in 1944, Soviet Union teuk ower it again. Efter Warld War II, the toun wis cedit tae Soviet Union. Soviet ceetizens wur transferred tae the toun efter the war (mainly frae Ukraine, Belaroushie, an Roushie) an in 1949 toun wis renamit Svetogorsk.
Efter the Winter War the Finns an the Soviets disagreed on the interpretation o the peace treaty regardin Enso. The umwhile Meenister for Foreign Affairs o Finland Väinö Tanner wrote in his memoirs: "Awready nou a dispute aboot the destrict o Enso developit. Accordin tae the map attached tae the peace treaty Enso wis clearly intendit tae belang tae Finland but the Roushies claimit that it shoud belang tae them. Later the map wis redrawn accordin tae the interests o the Roushies so that the border bends at Enso." [6]
In 1972 the Soviet Union awairdit Finland a construction project for a lairge new cellulose an paper mill in Svetogorsk. The project wis peyed wi Soviet crude ile. The project gae a stairt tae cross-border relations an aw. Notably, the construction wirkers in Svetogorsk wur cried "builders", an the project haed intent tae "build friendship atween fowk".
Industrie
eeditAfore the Winter War the toun wis a major factory steid for Enso-Gutzeit Oy, the Finnish pulp an paper company (nou Stora Enso). In the airmistice o 1940 the new Finnish-Soviet mairch wis deliberately drawn tae leave the factory complex on the Soviet side. The toun's major industrie is still pulp an paper.
OAO Svetogorsk, ane o the biggest paper mills in Roushie, is the major employer. Coverin twa square kilometres, OAO Svetogorsk produces pulp, printin paper, an packagin buird. Its buists include Svetocopy an Ballet office paper. Syne Dizember 1998, OAO Svetogorsk haes been majority awned bi International Paper. Immediately adjacent tae OAO Svetogorsk is a tissue mill. This formit pairt o the oreeginal mill complex but wis split-awa an resauld bi International Paper tae SCA durin the acquisition o OAO Svetogorsk frae Tetra Laval, which controlled the plant syne 1995. Svetogorsk Tissue, as the separate entity wis tae be cried, became fully integratit intae SCA Hygiene Products Division in 2003. It employs aroond 400 fowk. Its products include Zewa an Tork buists o paper touels an toilet tissue.
Border
eeditThe Imatra-Svetogorsk mairch plays a key role in the transportation o timmer atween Roushie an Finland. An aw, aroond 150 employees commute daily frae Imatra tae the paper mills. The mairch crossin, which haed temporary status, wis a frequent cause o bottlenecks due tae lengthy customs checks an inadequate facilities. A Roushie-Finland greement in 1997 alloued the development an eventual permanence o the mairch crossin. This €7 million European Union TACIS fundit project ran frae 1999 an the new internaitional frontier, capable o handlin 1,300 caurs per day, opened on 3 Julie 2002. Further TACIS programmes are planned till 2010, includin impruivements tae toun infrastructur an the development o an industrial pairk wi special tax rates.
