Sucumbíos is a province in northeast Ecuador. The caipital an lairgest ceety is Nueva Loja (kent as Lago Agrio an aw). It is the fift lairgest province in the kintra, wi an aurie o 18,009 km². As o 1998, it haes a population o 144,774 inhabitants.

The main river in the province is the Aguarico River. It passes close tae Nueva Loja, an empties into the Napo, on the Peruvian border. ither important rivers are the Putumayo, which marks the border wi Colombie, an the Coca an Napo Rivers, in the sooth.

History

Sucumbíos wis an unsplorit aurie, whare anerlie indigenous fowk livit, till ile wis discovered in its soil. In 1979, efter nine years o foondation, Nueva Loja became the seat o its awn canton, Lago Agrio Canton, in the Napo Province. On 13 Februar 1989, Sucumbíos became the 21st province in the kintra when it separatit frae Napo.

The maist important naitural resoorce in the province is ile, the Lago Agrio ile field. Thus, Sucumbíos is ane o the maist important provinces in the kintra, economically.
