It is locatit in the Finland Proper region. The municipality haes a population o 52,312[2] (Januar 31, 2019) an covers an aurie o 2,168.30 square kilometre (837.19 sq mi) o which 181.78 km2 (70.19 sq mi) is watter.[1] The population densitie is 26.33/km2 (68.2/sq mi).
In Finnish salo means woodland, backwoods but an aw a woodit island. It is thocht that Salo haes meant the island that ower thoosan years ago existit tae the sooth o the current toun but is the day a hill, no even vera close tae the sea.[6]
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Salo haes existit as a centre o rural commerce syne at least the 16t century, grewn in the location whaur the Great Costal Road,[7] the important East-Wast road, crossed River Salo; the river providit the fairway tae the sea. In 1887 Salo offeecially became a mercat toun an, in the beginnin o 1891, an independent municipality.[8] The aurie o the municipality wis initially vera sma, anerlie 0.65 km². In 1932 it grew tae 18 km² when auries frae neighbourin Uskela an Halikko wur annexed tae Salo. Eventually Salo became a toun in 1960. The day its main claim tae notability is as a developin an manufacturin plant for Nokia, an can therefore be considered as the oreeginal hame toun o Nokia phones. Nokia an aw is ane o biggest employers in this region.
