Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island (PEI or P.E.I.; French: Île-du-Prince-Édouard, pronounced [il dy pʁɛ̃s edwaːʁ], Mi'kmaq: Epekwitk, Scots Gaelic: Eilean_Eòin) is a Canadian province consistin o an island o the same name, as well as ither islands. The maritime province is the smawest in the naition in baith land aurie an population. The island haes a few ither names: "Garden o the Guwf" referrin tae the pastoral scenery an lush agricultural lands throughoot the province; an "Birthplace o Confederation", referrin tae the Charlottetown Conference in 1864, although PEI did no join the confederation till 1873, when it became the seivent Canadian province.

Accordin tae the 2011 census, the province o Prince Edward Island haes 140,204 residents. It is locatit approximately 200 km north o Halifax, Nova Scotia an 600 km east o Quebec Ceety. It consists of the main island plus 231 minor islands.[4] Altogether, the entire province has a land area of 5,685.73 km2 (2,195.27 sq mi).[2]

The main island is 5,620 km2 (2,170 sq mi) in size,[4] an is the 104t-lairgest island in the warld, an Canadae's 23rd-lairgest island.

Etymology

The island wis namit for Prince Edward, Duke o Kent an Strathearn (1767–1820), the fowert son o Keeng George III an the faither o Queen Victoria.
