Etymologie
eeditThe place name is said tae hae oreeginatit frae the Mordvin ksty, meanin "strawberry".[6]
History
eeditThe veelage o Kstovo wis mentioned as early as the 14t century.
Wi the construction o Novogorkovsky Ile Refinery (Новогорьковский нефтеперерабатывающий завод; stairtit operations on 18 August 1958[7]) in the 1950s, a new toun wus biggit a few kilometres tae the sootheast o the auld veelage o Kstovo, on the heich grund atween the Volga an the Kudma Rivers.
Syne then, the wastren pairt o the toun centred aroond the oreeginal veelage o Kstovo, an, still quite landwart in character, haes been commonly referred tae as the Auld Kstovo (Staroye Kstovo), while the newer eastren pairt, biggit in the 1950s, an still expandin, is kent as the New Kstovo (Novoye Kstovo). As the New Kstovo expandit ower the years, it completely or pairtially displacit several smawer veelages. Accordin tae Google Maps (2012), the veelages o Lukeryino (maistly demolished) an Vishenki (still preservin its landwart character) are nou athin the offeecial ceety leemits, whilk Veliky Vrag remains ootside o them.
Kstovo wis grantit urban-teep dounset status in 1954 an toun status in 1957.
Education
eeditAn Ile Industry Commonty College (Neftyanoy Technicum) trains skilled wirkers an technicians for the petrochemical industrie.
Nizhny Novgorod Tehcnological Varsity affers fore-nicht classes in Kstovo for the students studyin in its Distance Education chemical ingineerin program.[8]
Nizhny Novgorod Militar Ingineerin College (Roushie: Нижегородское высшее военно-инженерное командное училище), foondit in 1801 in Saunt Petersburg an muivit in 1960 tae Kaliningrad, receivit its current name in 1995, whan it wis transferred tae Kstovo.[9]
Cultur
eeditThe toun haes a puppet theatre an aw, a palace o cultur, a public library, an an active chess club.
The movie theatre (oreeginally namit "Saturn", then "50 Let VLKSM" (i.e., "50 Years' Anniversary o Komsomol", an feenally "Rus'"), wis popular wi the ceetizens durin the Soviet era, but closed doun efter the advent o VCRs an DVDs. Pairt o its premises wur uised bi an Eldorado electronics store for a few years in the early 2000s.
Sports
eeditKstovo's best kent sportin venue is The Warld Academy o Sambo, which haes hostit mony naitional an internaitional Sambo warstlin competitions. Its oreegins go back tae 1964, whan the first local Sambo club wis formit. In October 1976, a Sambo School biggin wis opened on the wastren edge o the toun; in 1995, in time for the Sambo Warld Cup, a new, tawer biggion wis constructit next tae it, the facility becomin kent as the "Warld Academy o Sambo".[10]
Releegion

The Kirk o Oor Lady o Kazan in the Auld Kstovo wis biggit in the late 19t century, closed durin the Communist era, when its biggin wis uised for a printshop, an re-opened an augmentit in the early 1990s.
Closer tae the ceety centre is anither Kirk o Oor Lady o Kazan; awtho it can be seen frae mony apairtment biggins on Kstovo's new north-east side, this historic biggin (constructit in 1792 an is nou protectit as a heritage steid) is actually locatit in the veelage o Veliky Vrag, which haes no (yet) been annexed bi the toun. juist northeast o the ceety; it wis biggit in, awned bi the federal govrenment.
