Hedmark maks up the northeastren pairt o Østlandet, the sootheastren pairt o the kintra. It includes a lang pairt o the borderline wi the Swadish coonties o Dalarna an Värmland. The lairgest lakes are Femunden an Mjøsa. It includes pairts o Glomma an aw. Geographically, Hedmark is in the traditional sense dividit in the follaein auries: Hedemarken, east o Mjøsa, Østerdalen, north of Elverum, an Glåmdalen, south of Elverum. Hedmark an Oppland are the anerlie Norse coonties wi nae coastline. Hedmark hostit some o the 1994 Winter Olympic Gemmes an aw.
Hamar, Kongsvinger, Elverum an Tynset are ceeties in the coonty. Hedmark is ane o the less urbanizit auries in Norawa; aboot hauf o the inhabitants live on rural land. The population is mainly concentratit in the rich agricultural destrict adjoinin Mjøsa tae the sootheast. The coonty's extensive forests supply hintle o Norawa's timber; logs wur previously floatit doun Glomma tae the coast but are nou transportit bi truck an train.
The Hedmark municipality o Engerdal haes the distinction o markin the current soothmaist border in Norawa o Sápmi, the traditional region o the Sami fowk.

eeditIn the early Viking Age, afore Harald Fairhair, Hedmark wis a petty kinrick. Kings o Hedmark include:

Hedmark wis oreeginally a pairt o the lairge Akershus amt, but in 1757 Oplandenes amt wis separatit frae it. Some years later, in 1781, this wis dividit intae Kristians amt (nou Oppland) an Hedemarkens amt.
The name
eeditThe Norse form o the name wis Heiðmǫrk. The first element is heiðnir, the name o an auld Germanic tribe. The last element is mǫrk f 'firthland, borderland, march'. (See an aw Telemark an Finnmark.)
Till 1919 the coonty wis cried Hedemarkens amt.
