eeditThe coonty is conventionally dividit intae the traditional destricts Follo an Romerike, which fill the vast pairt o the coonty, as well as the sma exclave wast o Oslo that consists o Asker an Bærum. This resultit efter the transfer o the great municipality o Aker (surroondin Oslo) frae Akershus coonty tae Oslo in 1948.
Embracing numerous suburbs o Oslo, notably Bærum, Akershus is ane o the maist densely populatit auries in the kintra. The main naitional railwey lines intae Oslo run throu Akershus wi mony junctions an stations sic as Asker, Sandvika, Ski an Lillestrøm. Akershus includes some o the lake Mjøsa an some o the river Glomma.
The coonty includes the historical place Eidsvoll an aw, 48 km north o Oslo, in which the Naitional assembly ratifeed the Norse constitution in 1814. Sooth o Eidsvoll is the internaitional airport o Oslo Airport at Gardermoen. Oslo's previous internaitional airport, Fornebu, is locatit in Akershus an aw. The estate o the croun prince is locatit in Asker (the ryal palace is in Oslo).

History

In 1662 Akershus became an Amt, an in 1685 Buskerud wis separatit frae Akershus an became an Amt o its awn. In 1768 Hedmark an Oppland wur separatit frae Akershus an aw tae acome Oplandenes Amt (an Askim, Eidsberg an Trøgstad wur transferred tae Østfold). In 1842 the ceety o Christiania (Oslo) wis made a separate Amt as well. In 1919 the term Amt wis chyngit tae Fylke. In 1948 Aker, the greatest an the maist populous municipality o Akershus, wis transferred tae the ceety o Oslo.
The name
eeditThe coonty is namit efter Akershus Fortress. The fortress wis biggit in 1299, an the meanin o the name is "the (fortifeed) hoose o (the destrict) Aker". The name is somewha misleadin nouadays, syne the fortress is nou ootside Akershus (it is in Oslo syne 1842). In fact, the admeenistration o Akershus sits ootside the coonty as well, in the centre o Oslo.
