Dovzhansk, Ukraine
Dovzhansk (Ukrainian: Довжанськ, translit. Dovzhans’k; Roushie: Должанск) is a city in Luhansk Oblast (province) of south-eastern Ukraine. Servin as the Administrative Center ofDovzhanskyi Raion (district), the city itself is designated as a separate region within the oblast, an is located approximately 80 km from the oblast capital, Luhansk.

The current estimated population is around 72,531 (as of 2001). Most of the city residents work in the mining industry.
HistoryEedit
The city tracks its roots from a small village in the heidstream of Dolzhyk River. At the end of the 18th century, it was granted by Catherine the Great to ataman Vasyl Orlov as a reward for his excellent military service. The fermland took on the name Dolzhykovo-Orlovske. Development o the aurie significantly expanded towards the end of the 19th century, efter the discovery of coal in the Donetsk region. In 1938 the dounset received the status and its current name in memory o the Bolshevik leader Yakov Sverdlov.
