The coonty, which is locatit at the Skagerrak coast, extends frae Gjernestangen at Risør tae Kvåsefjorden at Lillesand. The inner pairts o the aurie includes Setesdalsheiene an Austheiene. The majority o the population live near the coast; aboot 78% o the coonty's indwallers live in the five coastal municipalities Arendal, Grimstad, Lillesand, Tvedestrand an Risør. The rest o the coonty is spairsely populatit. Tourism is important, as Arendal an the ither coastal touns are popular attractions.
The coonty includes the islands o Tromøy, Justøya, an Sandøya. The interior o the coonty encompasses the traditional destrict o Setesdal, throu which the Otra river flows tae the coast.
