Almaty Province is the province which surroonds the ceety o Almaty. The province borders Kyrgyzstan an Xinjiang in the Fowkrepublic o Cheenae. The province touches three ither Kazakh provinces an aw: Jambyl Province tae the wast, Karagandy Province tae the northwast an East Kazakhstan Province tae the north. Almaty Province haes a aurie o 224,000 square kilometres.

Loch Balkhash (Balqash Koli in Kazakh) taks up pairt o the northwast o the province. The Trans-Ili Alatau branch o Tian Shan Muntains extend frae Cheenae an Kyrgyzstan intae Almaty Province, alang its soothren border wi Kyrgyzstan.

Charyn Canyon, Ili River, Bartogai an Kapshagay lochs, Loch Kaindy an Loch Kolsai, Loch Issyk are locatit in the province.

History

Alma-Ata Province, the predecessor o the day's Almaty Province, wis creatit frae the historical region o Zhetysu on 10 Mairch 1932. Its caipital wis Alma-Ata (Almaty). Several times durin the Soviet period, the north-eastren pairt o the province, centred on Taldykorgan, wis separatit frae Alma-Ata Province, formin a separate Taldy-Kurgan Province, anerly tae be mergit intae Alma-Ata Province again several years later.

In Apryle 2001 the admeenistrative centre o the Almaty Province wis muivit frae Almaty tae Taldykorgan. Thus Taldykorgan haes become a provincial caipital again - this time athoot splittin a province.
