Yellowknife (/[unsupported input]ˈjɛlnf/) (2011 population: 19,234[1]) is the caipital an lairgest ceety o the Northwast Territories (NWT), Canadae. It is locatit on the northren shore o Great Slave Lake, approximately 400 km (250 mi) sooth o the Airctic Circle, on the wast side o Yellowknife Bay near the ootlet o the Yellowknife River. Yellowknife an its surroondin watter bodies wur namit efter a local Dene tribe ance kent as the 'Copper Indians' or 'Yellowknife Indians' (nou referred tae locally as the Yellowknives Dene (First Nation) who tradit tuils made frae copper deposits near the Airctic Coast. The current population is ethnically mixed. O the eleiven offeecial leids o the Northwast Territories, five are spoken in significant nummers in Yellowknife: Dene Suline, Dogrib, Sooth an North Slavey, Inglis leid, an French. In the Dogrib leid, the ceety is kent as Somba K'e ("whare the money is").[8]
