Torpoint (Cornish: Penntorr) is a ceevil parish an toun on the Rame Peninsula in sootheast Cornwall, Ingland, Unitit Kinrick. It is situatit opposite the ceety o Plymouth athort the Hamoaze which is the tidal estuary o the River Tamar.[1]

Torpoint haes a population o 8,457 (2001 census). In the Cornish leid Torpoint is cried Penntorr (local folk baund Pentorr hae taken their name frae this).

Torpoint is linked tae Plymouth (an Devonport) bi the Torpoint Ferry. The three vessels that operate the service are chain ferries – that is, they are propelled athort the river bi pullin thairsels on fixed chains which lie athort the bed o the river. The journey takes aboot seiven minutes.

It is said that Torpoint's name is derived frae Tar Point, a name gien acause o the initial industry on the wast bank o the Hamoaze. Housomeivver this is actually a nickname gien bi wirkers, Torpoint meanin "rocky heidland".[2]

History

Torpoint is an aichteent century planned toun. The grid-based design for the toun wis commissioned bi Reginald Pole Carew in the Parish o Antony in 1774. His family continued te hae a strang influence in the aurie, haein become the Carew Poles, an still reside at their family seat, Antony House.

Due tae the presence o Devonport Dockyard, the toun grew as Dockyard wirkers settled there. The establishment o the Ryal Navy's main trainin facility, HMS Raleigh an aa increased the population o Torpoint.

John Langdon Down wis born in Torpoint in 1828, he later described the condition which is nou referred tae as Down syndrome. He wis cried back on a number o occasions tae help his faither in his local business till his faither's daith in 1853.
