Sisimiut, formerly Holsteinsborg, is a toun in central-wastren Greenland, locatit on the coast o Davis Strait, approximately 320 km (200 mi) north o Nuuk. It is the admeenistrative centre o the Qeqqata Municipality an the seicont-lairgest toun in Greenland, wi a population o 5,460 fowk as o 2010. The first indwallers wur the Inuit fowks o the Saqqaq cultur, Dorset cultur, an then the Thule fowk, whose descendants fairm the majority o the current population. Airtifacts frae the early dounset era can be foond throughoot the region, favored in the past for its plentiful fauna, parteecularly the marine mammals providin subsistence for the early huntin societies. The population o modren Greenlanders in Sisimiut is a mix o the Inuit an Danish fowks, who first settled in the aurie in the 1720s, unner the leadership o the Danish missionary, Hans Egede.
