Sgonico (Slovene: Zgonik) is a comune (municipality) in the Province o Trieste in the Italian region Friuli-Venezia Giulia, locatit aboot 12 km northwast o Trieste, on the border wi Slovenie. As o 31 December 2004[update], it haed a population o 2,130 an a aurie o 31.3 km2.[1] Accordin tae the 1971 census, 81.6% o the population are Slovenes.

Name
eeditThe name o the dounset wis first attestit in 1309 as Swonich (an as de Svonicho in 1348, de Vonicho in 1373, de Champanilo in 1374, de villa Svonich in 1421, Suonich an de Suonigo in 1525, an Sgonico in 1819). The name is o Slovene oreegin, derivit frae the Slovene common noun zvonik, "belfry", (in reference tae the kirk o Saunt Michael). The phonological chynge zvonik tae zgonik is characteristic o the local Slovene dialect; cf. dialect zgon an aw, "bell", frae zvon.[2]
