Frae a previous Proto-Baltic neuter noon *wuolan, frae Proto-Baltic *wuol-, frae Proto-Indo-European *wēl-, *wōl-, the lenth grade o the stem *wel- (tae turn, tae rowe, tae wind), whance an aw velt “tae rowe, tae trunnle.” The oreeginal meanin wis tharefore “something that turns, rowes,” still veesible in the dialectal verb olāt (tae rowe, tae trunnle), and in the standard Latvian term olis (round pebble), dialectally an aw ola. It is possible that Proto-Indo-European *h₂ōwyóm (egg), that wad hae acome *wowan in Proto-Baltic, mey hae influenced the development o *wuolan intae ola. A synonym term pauts wis uised alangside ola till the beginnin o the 20t century, whan ola becam dominant an replaced it. Cognates include Lithuanian uolà (cliff, rock).[1]
