Etymology

Kerry is an anglicisation o Ciarraí, itself derived frae Ciarraighe, or "fowk o Ciar", the name o the pre-Gaelic tribe who lived in pairt o the present coonty. The legendary foonder o the tribe wis Ciar, son o Fergus mac Róich. In Auld Erse "Ciar" meant black or daurk broun, an the wird continues in uise in modren Erse as an adjective describing a daurk complexion. The suffix raighe, meanin fowk/tribe, is foond in various -ry place names in Ireland, such as OsryOsraighe Deer-Fowk/Tribe.
