Televeesion nou telly
eeditThe airticile title uised tae be televeesion. Telly or 'the telly' is mair common in modern Scots so haes been chynged. The airticle itsel needs updatit tae reflect this. Soothrhins (tauk) 08:09, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
The change is linguistically telling. Telly (or TV) is also the colloquial English for television in many parts of the English-speaking world. Apart from 'posh' people, most people just say telly (or TV). Of course the English Wikipedia uses the formal word because encylopedias aren't usually written in a colloquial style. Once upon a time when 'posh' people also spoke Scots they would have called it a televeesion in line with the Scots pronunciation of vision. [1] Of course, now that Scots actually functions as local varieties of colloquial English rather than a formalized language in its own right, you either 'revive' posh Scots for a formal register ("no body speaks like that") or end up with an encyclopedia written in a pastiche of colloquial Scots, colloquial English and formal English for want of better alternatives. Bear in mind that most English-speakers don't speak like an encylopedia article either. Nogger (tauk) 19:54, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- (en) Indeed it is telling. Telling me at least that we need an official Scots Language Board that can keep the living language of Scots up to date. Depending on how you look at it, other language Wikipedia's actually just make reference to which words to use when (not only to dictionaries but reputed sources for how words are used). I don't think that is incongruous to what the sco:Wiki community were doing during the Editathon. You may find the following links to the Scottish Corpus interesting with regards to which words are more commonly used within Scots, [1] and [2]. soothrhins (tauk) 20:10, 1 September 2020 (UTC)
- Unsuprising that in a corpus from the era of electronic texts including both Scots (most of which I suspect will be in a colloquial style) and Scottish English, the colloquial telly is most common. Veesion does occur though too. [3] Not that that proves anything other than that it has been used. Though I am taken by the idea of lexical choices for an encyclopedia being based on some kind of corpus based lexical popularity contest rather than considerations of register and style.
