The ceety wis settled bi French immigrants frae Bordeaux an Louisiana, led bi Don Louis de Clouet, on 22 Aprile 1819.[1] Its oreeginal name wis Fernardina de Jagua, in honour o Ferdinand VII o Spain. The dounset became a toun (Spaingie: Villa) in 1829, an a ceety in 1880. The ceety wis subsequently namit Cienfuegos, sharin the name wi Cienfuegos, a Captain General in this time, in the island.
