The rivers in the wast drain intae various richt tributars o the Sukhona, sic as the Tolshma, the Ledenga, an the Staraya Totma.

The aurie wis oreeginally populatit bi the Finno-Ugric peoples an then colonisit bi the Novgorod Republic. In the 12t century, Totma an the surroondin auries wur awready unner the control o Novgorod. Efter the faw o Novgorod, the aurie became a pairt o the Grand Duchy o Moscow. In the 14t century, salt wis discovered in the glen o the Ledenga, an the selo o Ledengskoye (nou cried imeni Babushkina) became kent for its salt production.[12]

On 30 Julie 1931, Roslyatinsky Destrict wis mergit intae Ledengsky Destrict, then in 1935 it wis re-establisht, an on 22 November 1960 Roslyatinsky Destrict wis abolisht again, an its aurie wis dividit atween Babushkinsky an Nikolsky Destricts.[8][13]
