The Anglo-Frisie leids ar distinguished frae ither Wast Germanic leids partially bi the Ingvaeonic nasal spirant law, Anglo-Frisian brightenin an bi the palatalization o Proto-Germanic *k tae a coronal affricate afore front vowels: cf. Inglis cheese an Wast Frisie tsiis tae Dutch kaas an German Käse, or Inglis church an Wast Frisie tsjerke tae Dutch kerk an German Kirche. Early Anglo-Frisian formed a Sprachbund wi Auld Saxon, which is coontit amang the Law Saxon-Law Franconian leids.

The German linguist Friedrich Maurer rejectit Anglo-Frisian as a heestorical subdivision o the Germanic leids. Instead, he proposed North Sea Germanic or Ingvaeonic, a common ancestor o Auld Frisie, Auld Inglis an Auld Saxon.
