While the modren city wis offeecially foondit on Aprile 1, 1889, Akita haes been ane o the maist important ceeties in the Tohoku region syne the medieval period. The Ashina an Satake daimyo clans established thair caipital in present-day Akita.

Historically, Akita haes seen chynges throughoot at least fower historical Japanese periods; Edo, Meiji, Showa an Heisei. The beginnins o Akita wur in the Edo period. A dounset, kent as Kubota Castle Toun, wis fairmed that wad later become the centre o Akita. Construction is datit tae 1604.

Meiji eedit

Progress in the Meiji era includit the renamin o the "Taihei" Schuil (太平学校) tae "Akita Normal" Schuil (師範学校) on Aprile 12 o 1878. In Julie, the schuil seestem wis dividit intae 2 seestems, the Kitaakita an Minamiakita destricts. A year later, on Aprile 1, 1889, Akita wis offeecially established. On Aprile 1, 1997 Akita wis designatit as a core city in Japan. In August 2001 The Warld Gemmes wur held in Akita, wi the openin ceremony held in the Yabase Track an Field Stadium. In 2004, the city celebratit its 400t anniversary an its beginnins as Kubota Castle toun.

Merger wi Kawabe Destrict eedit

On Januar 11, 2005, the city addit the touns o Kawabe an Yūwa tae become the new city o Akita. This incorporatit what remained o Kawabe Destrict, sicweys dissolvin the destrict. The merger celebration wis held at AL☆Ve.
