1952 the East German govrenment wi the big admeenistrative reform renamit them tae Kreise (districts), an creatit the new destricts Klingenthal an Reichenbach bi decreasin the size o the previous anes. Efter the German Reunification the chynges o the 1952 reform wur maistly undone, an in 1996 the 5 destricts wur mergit tae form the Vogtlandkreis.

In the destrict reform o 1 August 2008 the toun o Plauen wis includit intae the destrict.

Geography

The Vogtlandkreis is namit efter the geographic aurie it covers, the Vogtland. Locatit in the Erzgebirge it contains a lot o forests. The main river is the Weiße Elster.
