A little ower a mile tae the north-wast at Castle Hill are the earthwork remains o a medieval motte an bailey castle. The Kirk o St Peter an St Paul is lairgely 14t century. It is aiblins kent pairticularly for the early meenistry o Jeremy Taylor. Uppingham Workhouse wis first recordit in 1777 wi space for 40 inmates. Till 1834 it wis a parish wirkhoose, but in 1836 the Uppingham Poor Law Union began, an a new Union workhouse wis built on Leicester Road tae hoose 158 fowk tae a design bi airchitect William Donthorne. In the Great War, the biggin wis uisit as an auxiliary hospital staffed bi a Voluntary Aid Detachment. The wirkhoose wis closed in 1929, an taken ower bi Uppingham Schuil which uises the biggin as a boardin hoose.
Govrenance eedit
Uppingham ward, which includes the neighbourin parish o Beaumont Chase, haes three cooncillors on Rutland Coonty Cooncil. The Mayor o Uppingham is currently (2011) Peter Rees. His faither wis the first mayor o the toun.[1] The Chair of Uppingham First is Ron Simpson.[2]

Schuils in Uppingham include Uppingham School, an independent schuil foondit in 1584.[3] an a state seicontary schuil, Uppingham Community College an twa primary schuils: Leighfield an Uppingham Kirk o Ingland Schuil.
Transport eedit
Uppingham railway station, at the end o a branch line frae Seaton, wis opened in 1894 an wis locatit at the end o Queen Street. Passenger services wur athdrawn in 1960 an the line closed completely in 1964. The station aurie haes nou been redeveloped as an industrial estate. The nearest railwey station is at present Oakham on the cross-kintra line atween Birmingham, Leicester an Peterborough. Although the operational railway line runs closest tae Uppingham at Manton Junction, it haes nae station. An east-wast A47 bypass opened in Juin 1982.
Sport eedit
Uppingham plays host tae a number o different sports; in pairticular fitbaa, whaur Uppingham Toun F.C play their gemmes at Tod's Piece. A new cricket pitch for the toun is currently being laid oot.
