Flag bad Scots eedit

Hello Irtapil! In this edit comment you asked how to flag articles in bad Scots. I think this is what you're looking for. --Andreas (tauk) 09:00, 23 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

thanks @Andreas:, is there a way to flag a reason for suspicion if we're not fluent enough to judge? a succinct word or two rather than starting a talk page thread? such as "single author". Irtapil (tauk) 03:08, 24 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

(en) Hey, I've seen you've made several pages in your userspace (1 2 3 etc) here that seem more suited to the English Wikipedia than they do here, being in English with English wikilinks in mind (including to enwiki discussions). Some, related to Palentstine and Israel, are straight up copypastes. May I ask a) why b) do you intend to do anything Scots-related with them (given your self-confessed lack of knowledge of the language) c) is this related to your enwiki topic ban/block? (courtesy ping to blocking en admin @ScottishFinnishRadish:) CiphriusKane (tauk) 20:06, 12 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply

@CiphriusKane
I'm not currently blocked on English wiki, I'm just banned from the topic I am currently most interested in. The ban is self-enforced and I'm not sure yet which things are allowed. I was stressed about getting it wrong again - I was blocked for a week after the first time I got it wrong - so I moved my notes to a place the topic ban definitely didn't apply. I like to take a lot of notes in my user-space with links to favourite articles, or personal backups of pages that I found interesting but others might think aren't notable enough to keep. Out of the wikis I've previously worked on, this was the place where most of the templates etc. still worked.
I have previously worked on Scots wiki, see above, and here [1][2][3][4] But I am very limited in what I can contribute given I am not fluent in the language. When you sent this I was switching a couple of red linked categories I saw on pages ("Eastren Mediterranean" and "Soothren Levant") to broader categories that did exist ("Mediterranean" and "Levant"), which is hopefully helpful?
I don't lack knowledge of Scots, just fluency, and I definitely don't want to repeat the mistake of the very enthusiastic contributor who wrote most of the original Scots wiki. I understand some Scots, from similarity to Australian English, Northern English dialects, and German, and I'm genuinely interested in Scots, I'm just not able to write well in Scots. I would like to contribute here, but I'm not sure what I can do to be most useful?
Most of my interests relate to languages and geography, hence my previous interest in Scots wiki.

I'm not sure what to do with Category: History o Lebanon? The broader category is less clear for that given it is the intersection of history + Lebanon. Irtapil (tauk) 12:13, 13 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply
I also turned the red-linked Category: Nile into a proper category, because it seemed to have several things in it. Is that a suitable category to exist? I'm wanting to check I am on the right track before I get carried away in a direction that might be unhelpful. Irtapil (tauk) 17:00, 13 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply
(en) Most of the categories were taken from enwiki willy nilly in the first place, so it's fine to create them (we've been working on cleaning those up, but creating them is just as good). As for the backups, someplace like Google Docs or a private wiki would probably be better. If it's a specific revision, then a URL to the page. Having copies of articles in English without any intent to turn them into Scots is something I'm not happy with. As for the topic ban, did you consider contacting the enforcing admin (ScottishFinnishRadish) about what is and isn't allowed?
Also, I'd recommend reading Myths about Scots Wikipedia because you're currently echoing a few of them CiphriusKane (tauk) 17:22, 13 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply
@CiphriusKane
Ok, I'll not add any more pages that aren't connected to stuff here. But please give me a while to work out what to do with what is here already before you delete it or anything, if that is ok?
Google docs was going to be my last resort idea for where to put the notes I currently have in my en.wiki user-space pages. I would have to modify them a lot. Here seemed to be the place that would involve modifying them least.
A private wiki would be ideal, but I wasn't really sure how to do that. Do you know if I can set it up just stored locally, and thus skip the fuss of hosting it on line.
"… did you consider contacting the enforcing admin…" I considered it, but I was being a wimp. I was scared to ask SFR, and hoping to avoid needing to by just finding an alternative, but I probably should just ask, given this might be a problem that doesn't actually need solving.

(en) Seems your best bet for setting up a private wiki is to follow the MediaWiki installation guide. As for the pages, I was going to wait it out and see for a bit anyway, just in case, and would only have touched the actual article copies (your links pages are fine, they just seem off being on here) CiphriusKane (tauk) 21:22, 13 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply
@CiphriusKane I'm only half way through reading that link so far… I knew that version of the Scots wiki mythology was over-simplified, but I wasn't sure how much. I know there must have been more than just one author, and a few were probably more genuine contributors, because not every page was written by the same person, and not every page was broken? It took a bit of investigating to work out which pages to flag.
I should read the rest another time though, first I need to work out where to keep all these notes. Setting up my own wiki seemed like way to much fuss at first glance, but it might be the least difficult option, I'll see if I can get a friend to help me.

@CiphriusKane The articles that were copies were things I was planning to add to or modify, otherwise yes I would have just saved it as pdf. Irtapil (tauk) 21:14, 19 Februar 2024 (UTC)Reply
