History

Tsu oreeginally developed as a port toun kent as Anotsu (安濃津) in the Nara an Heian periods. The port wis destroyed bi a tsunami in the 1498 Meiō Nankaidō yirdquauk. The toun wis rebuilt as a castle toun an a post station bi the Sudo clan, daimyo o Tsu Domain unner the Tokugawa shogunate. Durin the Edo era, it acame a popular stoppin pynt for travelers tae Ise shrine, aboot 40 km tae the sootheast.

Followin the Meiji restoration, it acame the caipital o Mie Prefectur in 1871. Wi the establishment o municipalities on Aprile 1, 1889, Tsu wis ane o oreeginal 31 ceeties tae be proclaimed.

Durin Warld War II, Allied air raids on Julie 24 an Julie 28, 1945 destroyed maist o the ceety an killed 1239 fowk

On Januar 1, 2006, the neighborin ceety o Hisai, the touns o Anō, Geinō an Kawage, an the veelage o Misato, aw frae Age Destrict; an the touns o Hakusan, Ichishi an Karasu, an the veelage o Misugi frae Ichishi Destrict, wur merged intae Tsu. As a result o the merger, the ceety acame the seicont lairgest in Mie bi population behind Yokkaichi, an acame the lairgest in Mie bi aurie ahead o Matsusaka.

Tsu is famous for its Tōjin Odori (唐人踊り), a festival commemoratin the arrival o the Joseon Tongsinsa delegation frae Korea durin the feudal period.[4] Thare are twa ither ceeties that celebrate Tōjin Odori: Suzuka ceety in Mie Prefectur an Ushimado-chō in Okayama Prefectur.[5]

The ruins o Tsu Castle hae been made intae a dountoun ceety pairk.
