In 1929 the twa destricts wur mergit intae the new destrict Grevenbroich-Neuss, which wis renamit tae Grevenbroich in 1946. In 1975 the urban destrict o Neuss lost its independent status an wis mergit intae the Grevenbroich destrict, which wis renamit tae Kreis Neuss tae represent the new admeenistrative seat. On 26 Mey 2003 it chyngit its name, an is nou offeecially cried Rhein-Kreis Neuss.

The main rivers o the destrict is the Rhine which forms maist o the north-eastren mairch o the destrict, as well as the Erft. In the soothren pairt o the destrict are big open pit Lignite (broun coal) mines.
