The aurie fell tae Proushie in 1815, which in 1816 creatit the three destricts Heinsberg, Erkelenz an Geilenkirchen. In 1932 the destricts Heinsberg an Geilenkirchen wur mergit, an in 1972 the Erkelenz destrict wis mergit as well. In 1975 the destrict got its present size when the municipality Niederkrüchten wis muivit tae the destrict Viersen.

Geografically it covers the lawlands o the Niederrheinische Bucht.
