eeditThe first mention o Põlva as a dounset dates frae 1452, in the 13t century. The name oreeginates frae the Estonie wird for knee (põlv), awtho its oreegin is no entirely clear. Legend haes it that a girl wis immured in a kneelin position in St. Mary's Kirk tae keep the devil awa. This is reputitly hou the toun wis namit.
Põlva wis an auld militar crossroad atween the north an sooth o Livonie. Aroond 1240, shortly efter the Christianization of Estonia, the Bernardine monks built a kirk order, which they dedicatit tae the Virgin Mary. The veelage kirk wis subordinate tae the Bishopric o Dorpat. The same pairish wis the result o the Livonie war unner Roushie domination in the 16t Century. In 1582 it became pairt o the soothren Estonie unner Pols sovereignty, an later it belangit tae Swaden. In 1721, in the Treaty o Nystad, Estonie an Livonie wur then cedit tae Roushie.

The toun grew lairger aroond the airtificial loch Põlva, whose sandy shores are croudit wi vacationers durin simmertime. The toun wis developit aroond St. Mary's Kirk, which lay in ruins for a lang time till it wis rebuilt efter the Great Northren War. In 1931 the railwey frae Tartu–Põlva tae St. Petersburg wis completit. On 10 August 1993 Põlva awairdit its toun chairter. Pairtner ceety is the Swadish Vårgårda in Västergötland.

eeditIn October 2013, efter the local govrenment cooncil elections, Põlva wis mergit tae the surroondin Põlva Pairish an tharefore lost its municipal status.
Afore thae cooncil consistit o 17 members electit on 18 October 2009 bi local votings. The govrenment consists o 5 members that wur electit bi the cooncil on 20 November 2009. Tarmo Tamm, who wis the mayor o Põlva for mair nor 11 years, went tae the pairlament in Aprile 2011.[1][2] Since 11 May 2011 the mayor is Georg Pelisaar.[3]
