Monfalcone is the fifth maist populous toun in Friuli-Venezia Giulia an the main centre o Bisiacaria territory. Joined tae its neebourheids, it reaches aboot 50,000 inhabitants. The toun lees atween the Carso hills an the Adriatic Sea, bein the northmaist port o the Mediterranean Sea.

History

In prehistoric times the aurie o Monfalcone hoosed several fortifeed veelages cried castellieri. Efter the foondation o the Roman ceety o Aquileia (181 BC), some thermal biggins wur creatit on the hills, kent as Insulae Clarae.

Efter the Ostrogoth, Byzantine, Lombard an Frank domination, Monfalcone wis controlled bi the Patriairch o Aquileia stairtin frae 967. The Venetians conquered it in 1420 efter three days o siege, keepin it till 1511, when it fell tae the French. Conquered back bi Venice, it wis ravagit bi the troops o emperor Maximilian I in 1513, who destroyed the Rocca. In 1521 it wis returned tae Venice, unner which it remained till 1797. It wis controlled bi Fraunce till the faw o Napoleon, efter which it became pairt o the Austrian Empire.

Durin Warld War I, the toun wis captured bi Italy in 1915. It wis briefly recaptured bi Austrick in 1917, efter the battle o Caporetto. Monfalcone returned tae Italy in 1918.
