At the end o the 1970s especially the destrict Marzahn grew as a result o the biggin o the developin aurie Marzahn. Consequently Marzahn wis formit oot o the five destricts the burgh consists o the day in 1979.
As a result o the biggin o twa mair developin auries (Hellersdorf an Kaulsdorf) the nummer o indwallers increased sae that the burgh Hellersdorf wis foondit oot o the three destricts Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf an Mahlsdorf on 1 Juin 1986. The burgh remained unthirlt until 2001.
In view o whole Berlin, Marzahn-Hellersdorf shows the biggest chynges concernin demografie. In 1991 the average age o the twa burghs reached a nummer o 30,5 years which increased tae 39,6 years due tae the migration o the younger fowk.

In 2001, the PDS garnered 51,1% o the vote in the elections for the burgh assembly (Bezirksverordnetenversammlung), an captured fower o the sax seats on the burgh cooncil (Bezirksamt). In the 2006 burgh assembly elections, the PDS wan 38,2%; the SPD, 25%; the CDU, 13%; the Greens, 5,1%; the NPD, 6,4%; an the FDP 5% o cast ballots. The destrict Kaulsdorf/Mahlsdorf wis wan bi the CDU; the remainin sax wur wan bi the PDS. Dagmar Pohle (PDS, nou the Left Pairty) wis electit as mayor o the burgh (Bezirksbuergermeister), Stefan Komoss (SPD) is the deputy mayor.
