History

eedit

The fortress wis established in 1492 durin the reign o Ivan III o Moscow an wis namit efter him. Atween 1581–1590 an atween 1612–1704 it wis controlled bi Swaden. Ivangorod wis grantit ceety privileges an admeenistered as a Roushie tounship unner the Croun o Swaden (who conquered it in 1612 frae boyar Teuvo Aminev) till 1649, when its burghers wur ordered tae remuive tae a Narva suburb. Despite ither chynges in territory an sovereignty, Ivangorod wis considered an admeenistrative pairt o the toun o Narva frae 1649 till 1945.

In the eftermath o the Estonie War o Unthirldom, the newly unthirlt Republic o Estonie established control ower the whole o Narva, includin Ivangorod, in Januar 1919, a muive which wis recognisit bi Soviet Roushie in the 1920 Treaty o Tartu. In Januar 1945, the Narva River wis defined as the mairch atween the Estonie SSR an Roushie SFSR, an as a result admeenistration o Ivangorod wis transferred frae Narva tae the Leningrad Oblast. Haein grown in population, Ivangorod receivit the offeecial status o toun in 1954.

Efter the restoration o Estonie unthirldom in 1991, thare hae been some disputes aboot the Estonie-Roushie mairch in the Narva aurie, as the new constitution o Estonie (adoptit in 1992) recognises the 1920 Treaty o Tartu mairch tae be currently legal. The Roushie Federation, housomeivver, considers Estonie tae be a successor o the Estonie SSR an recognises the 1945 mairch atween twa umwhile naitional republics. Offeecially, Estonie haes nae territorial claims in the aurie,[6][7] which is reflectit in the new Estonie-Roushie mairch treaty, accordin tae which Ivangorod remains pairt o Roushie. Awtho the treaty wis signed in 2005 bi the foreign meenisters o Estonie an Roushie, due tae continuin poleetical tensions it haes no been ratifee'd.
