Fort Lauderdale is named efter a series o forts built bi the Unitit States durin the Seicont Seminole War. The forts teuk their name frae Major William Lauderdale, who wis the commander o the detachment o sodgers who built the first fort. Housomeivver, development o the ceety did no begin till 50 years efter the forts wur abandoned at the end o the conflict. Three forts named "Fort Lauderdale" wur constructit; the first wis at the fork o the New River, the seicont at Tarpon Bend, in what is nou kent as the Sailboat Bend neighborhuid, an the third near the site o the Bahia Mar Marina.[11]
