It wis foondit in the beginnin o the 18t century as a veelage for wirkers o the local distillery, which wis closed in 1848. As o 1897, its population wis 8,500, an in 1919 it wis grantit toun status. Till 1972, the ceety's name wis Melekess (Мелекесс), efter the river. Syne 1972, the ceety's name is Dimitrovgrad, efter the Bulgarie communist Georgi Dimitrov.
