Formation an sel-titled album (2002–2004)

eedit

At the age o fifteen, bassist Jon Miller haed formit a baund wi drummer John Boecklin an guitarist Jeff Kendrick in heich schuil. The baund wis cried Area-51 an played cover versions o Metallica, Slayer, an Pantera.[1] Miller, Boecklin an Kendrick met Coal Chamber vocalist Dez Fafara while he wis in the process o recordin the album Dark Days wi Coal Chamber in 2002. The three wur playin in a local baund an talkit tae Fafara who said he wis thinkin aboot leavin Coal Chamber. Fafara said "Hey you guys write some heavy shit, and I want to get out of Coal Chamber".[2] Fafara hostit several barbecues efter muivin frae Orange Coonty tae Santa Barbara an wad jam wi muisickers he met, which led tae the formation o the baund.[3] Guitarist Evan Pitts met Fafara in a restaurant an gae him his phone nummer for a jam session, while John Boecklin who oreeginally played guitar then played drums, met Fafara at a bar.[4]

The baund wis oreeginally kent as Deathride, but later chyngit thair name tae DevilDriver acause Fafara felt thare wur ower mony baunds wi that name; a baund in Norfolk, Virginie, an a bicycle racin team.[5] Anither problem wis that the baund's label, Roadrunner Records wur unable tae secur copyricht.[6] The members compiled a leet o roughly twa hunder names tae go for a mair oreeginal approach. Fafara's wife haed a beuk bi Italian witchcraft author Raven Grimassi on Stregheria, an came athort the term 'devil driver'. The term 'devil driver' refers tae bells Italian witches uised tae drive evil forces awa. Fafara thocht it wis appropriate acause it soondit "evil", an thocht the term "suits his life".[7] The baund's logo is the Cross o Confusion, which haes existit for thoosans o years an refers tae "question releegion, question authority, question iverything aroond you". Fafara wis brocht up tae "question iverything" an wis exponit tae Italian witchcraft throu his guidparents.[4]

DevilDriver's debut record wis oreeginally goin tae be cried Thirteen,[8] an then Straight to Hell. Housomeivver, Fafara claims it wis chyngit "for so mony raisons that A canna even go intae."[9] The baund's sel-titled debut DevilDriver, wis released on 21 October 2003 unner Roadrunner Records, an entered the Top Heatseekers chairt at nummer 17.[10] Guitarist Pitts wrote roughly 90% o the muisic, accordin tae Mike Spreitzer, who replacit Pitts efter his depairtur frae the baund. Muisic creetics response tae the album wis generally negative. Allmusic reviewer Johnny Loftus commented that elements in the sangs "Die (And Die Now)" an "Swinging the Dead" redeem an itherwise disappointin album an howpit the baund wad focus less on the mainstream.[11]

The Fury of Our Maker's Hand (2005–2006)

eedit

The baund returned tae the studio in 2005 tae record thair follae-up tae DevilDriver. The album wis producit at Sonic Ranch Studios, a 1,400-acre (5.7 km2) pecan ranch, 40 mile (64 km) awa frae El Paso, Texas. The baund members wantit tae be isolatit when recordin the album sae thay coud solely focus on the muisic as friends, faimily, managers an girlfriends wad constantly interrupt. Roughly 30 sangs wur written which wur narraeed doun tae 15 bi the baund. The 15 sangs wur then played for producer Colin Richardson who wantit tae begin trackin immediately.

The name o the album wis thocht o bi Fafara who believit that The Fury of Our Maker's Hand refers tae the "stuirm" his life haes been the past 10 years, "You have your maker's hand and I have my maker's hand and we both living in our fury, the fury of our maker's hand. It explains my life".[12] The album wis released on 28 Juin 2005 an debuted on the Billboard 200 chairt at nummer 117, wi sales o 10,402 in its first week.[12] The album debuted at nummer 1 on the Top Heatseekers chairt an aw.[10] Johnny Loftus of Allmusic describit the album as "a severe turn awa frae the falter o their first album" an said that the baund made thair "true debut the seicont time aroond".[13] Dom Lawson o Kerrang! gae the album a positive review describin the album as a "fresh an exhilaratin approach tae modren metal".[14]

The baund toured extensively in support o the album, which included shows in the Unitit States, Europe, an Australie in support o baunds such as In Flames, Fear Factory, an Machine Head. The baund played for the first time as a heidliner in the Burning Daylight Tour. A Guinness warld record wis attemptit bi the baund for the "lairgest circle pit" at the festival. Guinness responded tae the query an denied the request statin thay receive ower 60,000 requests a year an thare is nae wey tae pheesically define whaur a circle pit stairts an ends. Thay considered the proposal fully in the context o the subject aurie an statit that "oor decision is feenal in this matter".[19][20] The baund appeared at 2007's Ozzfest an aw. Fafara haed been plannin tae tak his first sax weeks aff in 11 years, but Sharon Osbourne, who haed managit Fafara's previous baund Coal Chamber, persuadit him tae appear.[16] At a concert in Detroit, Michigan, a recordin wis made wi the intention o releasin a live DVD in 2008[21] awtho this haes yet tae be released.

DevilDriver's sangs "Devil's Son" an "Driving Down the Darkness" wur featurt in the TV programme Scrubs,[22] an in 2008 thay covered the Iron Maiden sang "Wasted Years" for the Kerrang! compilation Maiden Heaven: A Tribute to Iron Maiden.
