Batopilas, Chihuahua

Batopilas is a smaw toun, an seat o the surrounding municipality o the same name, in the Mexican state o Chihuahua, locatit alang the Batopilas River at the bottom o ane o the canyons that mak up the Copper Canyon. It haes a population o fewer than 2,000 fowk.

Batopilas wis established bi Spainyie conquistadores stairtin in 1632 as a centre for siller minin. Ower the centuries scores o hugely productive siller mines hae been dug in the area; ane estimate (Wilson an Panczner) is that mines in the aurie hae producit seiven times as much siller as come frae the famous silver mine of Kongsberg, Norawa. Little minin is nou done.

Lairge fortunes wur made, maist visibly reflectit in a castle-like hame that Alexander Robey Shepherd, the last govrenor o Washington, D.C., haed built efter leavin the Unitit States in 1875. It staunds athort the river frae the centre o the veelage an haes lang been in ruins. As o 2006 it is occupeed bi a nummer o local faimilies that give tours tae visitors for a smaw fee.

The Satevo mission, featurin a lairge kirk built fower centuries ago wi a mysterious past, is 8 kilometres frae Batopilas, alang the Batopilas River.
