eeditThe first recordit name o the Province wis Kumintang. Its centre, the present day Balayan, wis the maist progressive toun o the Province an the tradeetional centre o govrenance. Later, as the eruption o the Taal Volcano destroyed a significant portion o the toun, the provincial centre wis transferred tae Taal, which wis then cried Bonbon an the name o the province wis chyngit efter that o the toun.
The term Batangan means a raft, the fowk uised so that they coud fish in the nearbi Taal Loch. It meant the numerous logs foond in the Calumpang River an aw, the bouk o watter that runs throu the northeastren portion o the toun an assumes the shape o a tunin fork.
