The municipality o Urumita is locatit on the Serranía del Perijá muntain range wi pairt o its territory coverin the valley o the Cesar River towards the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta muntain range. The municipality seat o Urumita is housomeivver locatit on a flat aurie some 45 km awa frae the caipital o the Depairtment o Cesar, Valledupar an some 175 km frae the caipital ceety o the Depairtment o La Guajira, Riohacha.[3]
Urumita limits tae the north wi the municipality o Villanueva in a 36 km borderline; tae the sooth wi the municipality o La Jagua del Pilar sharin approximately 50 km; tae the east wi Venezuela, sharin 10 km; an tae the wast wi the municipality o Valledupar sharin 15 km coverin a total aurie o 329 km².[3]

Climate in the municipality o Urumita is wairm wi a average temperatur throuoot the year o 28°C variatin slichtly durin the twa rainy saison an the twa dry saisons, as well as the effect o the trade winds which flow frae northeast.[4]

Prior tae the arrival o the Spainyie colonizers the aurie o Urumita wis inhabied bi indigenous fowks perteenin tae the Chimilas. At the time o the Spainyie arrival in the early 16t hunderyear, the aurie wis govrened bi a Cacique named Uruma. Efter a period o conquest an colonization bi the Spainyie, on 3 October 1785 Juan Bautista Canalete foondit the veelage o Urumita. The veelage became pairt o the jurisdiction o the municipality o Villanueva athin the Govrenment o Santa Marta. It wis later made pairt o the Province o Padilla.[5]
In 1972 Urumita became a autonomous corregimiento bi Ordinance 043 o 1971 till 1978 when the Urumita was segregatit frae the municipality o Villanueva an became a relative status bi Ordinance 016 o the same year. In 1982 the previous ordinance o 1978 is reconfirmit bi ordinance 036 o 1982 rectifyin the limits wi Villanueva.[5]
Cultur eedit
The region haes a lairge presence o Calagualas, a plant considered medicinal. It is uised in various weys bi the population o Urumita, an it's pairt o its popular cultur. The locals celebrate the Festival y Reinado de las Flores y la Calaguala (Festival an Pageant o the Flouers an the Calaguala) in honor o the plant.[6]
