History

Treia is said tae hae been foondit bi the Sabine fowk in 380 BCE; it is certain that at in the plain belaw the modren toun an aboot 2 km (1.2 mi) tae the wast o it, at SS. Crocifisso, thare wis a smaw Roman toun bi that name, which is recordit as a municipium in 109 BCE. Lairge Egyptian releegious statues o the Roman period hae been foond an are kept in the toun's museum: they are unique in the Marche.

The Roman toun appears tae hae been abandoned at the faw o the Wastren Empire, an anerly in the 10t century wis a new toun foondit on the top o the hill, namit Montecchio. The toun sidit wi the Pape in the temporal struggles o central Italy, an wis besiegit several times, an in pairticular in 1239 bi Enzio, son an vicar o Frederick II an again in 1263 bi Conrad o Antioch, who wis captured at the nearbi battle o Vallesacco, an held for several months in toun in a smaw preeson (nou in uise as a caffé).

Montecchio eventually became pairt o the Papal States, an in 1790 Pape Pius VI rewairdit it for its faithfulness bi raisin it tae the offeecial rank o "ceety", at the same time renamin it bi its Roman name o Treia.

Treia's maist famous native wis the airchaeologist an airt creetic Luigi Lanzi.
