Construction of Tama New Town began in 1966, an the first occupants stairtit muivin in in 1971. On November 1, 1971, Tama Town wis reclassified as Tama City, dissolving Minamitama Destrict. Tama wis the last toun in the umwhile Minamitama Destrict.
