South Uist (Scots Gaelic: Uibhist a Deas) is a island o the Ooter Hebrides in Scotland. The population is aboot 90% Roman Catholic. The island, in common wi the rest o the Hebrides, is ane o the last remainin stranghaulds o the Gaelic leid in Scotland. In 2006 South Uist, an neighbouring Benbecula an Eriskay wur involvit in Scotland's biggest commonty laund buyoot tae date. In the north wast thare is a missile testin range. Its indwallers are kent in Gaelic as "Deasaich" (Southerners).
