Course
eeditThe river begins at Santiago Pontones (province o Jaén), passes Calasparra, Cieza, Murcia, Beniaján, Orihuela, Rojales an ends in the Mediterranean Sea near Guardamar del Segura in the province o Alicante. Some o its tributars are the Mundo (which stairts near Riópar), the Alhárabe (which stairts in Moratalla), the Mula an the Guadalentín.
The alluvial plain is cried the Vega del Segura an is a vera productive agricultural region growin a wide variety o fruit, vegetables an flouers. The Vegas are dividit intae three auries: Alta, Media an Baja (upper, middlin, an lawer).
Bi the 1990s, the Segura haed become ane o the maist pollutit rivers in Europe,[1] due tae the cannin industry an urban an agricultural residues oreeginatin in the densely populatit aurie in the middlin an lawer auries o the basin.[1] This fact combined wi law or extreme law flows in the same auries –the agricultural uisse o watter an simmer drocht coud reduce the mean dischairge tae juist aroond 2 tae 3 m³/s in Murcia ceety– made mair difficult tae dilute pollutants.
Public ootcry peakit in 2001, wi a demonstration gatherin 40,000 fowk.[1] A comprehensive action plan follaeed, an durin a 10 years interval, the Region o Murcia built 46 big an 51 smaw watter purification plants, investin some 640 million euros, maistly frae European funds.
Results follaed an the situation greatly impruivit wi the river comin back tae life. By 2013, otters an eels –baith species pairticularly sensitive tae watter pollutants– haed repopulatit lairge tracts o the river whaur they haed been absent for decades.[1][2]

Floods
eeditThe Segura is uisually in a state o semi-permanent drocht, housomeivver, nou an then, it does occasionally fluid as the consequence o the torrential rains (cauld drop), which teepically tak place ance ivery 6–9 years approximately, aye in Hairst an Ware.
Guadalentín river, a tributar o Segura, is the wildest European river.
In the twintiet hunderyear significant fluidin occurred in 1946, 1948, 1973, 1982, 1987 an 1989. Syne 1990 the lawer reaches o the river hae been canalizit, remuivin meanders an hence impruivin the evacuation o fluid watters. The new canal wis put tae the test in September 1997 an October 2000 when hivy rainfaw resultit in significant runaff.
